The Joan Staats Library supports the cutting-edge research and educational mission of The Jackson Laboratory in genetics, genomics, and biomedicine.

Our specialized collections focus on key areas including genetics, inbred mice, animal health and husbandry, developmental biology, embryology, complex traits, immunology, cancer, molecular biology, neuroscience, and computational biology.


Library resources include:

  • Access to over 11,000 electronic biomedical journals from major scientific publishers
  • A print collection of nearly 4,000 titles
  • A growing eBook collection

Located on the second floor of the Library and Conference Center in Bar Harbor, the library offers a range of services to support researchers and students worldwide, including:

  • Interlibrary loan
  • Scholarly communication support
  • Training in research tools such as EndNote, PubMed, Scopus, and other databases

The library also maintains the Jackson Laboratory Historical Archives Collection, which includes:

  • The Staff Personal Papers, including the George Davis Snell Papers
  • Publications from current and past research staff and students
  • A Photograph Collection of over 5,000 prints and negatives
